People don't get Memorial Day nowadays. Its not Veterans Day people. Its a full day to honor the fallen military service members. The ones that laid down their lives for our freedom. Maybe I have a harder time with Memorial Day because we actually lost a friend in the war. I always think of him, but more on this day of remembrance.
I understand the concept of honoring our Veterans....trust me I really do. I believe our military friends & my husband deserve a pat on the back. But today is not the day for that. I'm sorry, but I'm slightly offended when people send my husband cards for Memorial Day. My husband hates that Memorial Day has turned into the holiday it has for most Americans. BBQ's, picnics, the official day to change your oil & wash you car, the first weekend of summer vacation. I'm not telling you not to enjoy your weekend, our family still has a BBQ and enjoys friends. But we honor our fallen first.
I dislike people saying "HAPPY" Memorial Day. There isn't anything happy about it. I also dislike people thanking my husband on Memorial Day...he isn't dead. Sorry but its true.
Next year contemplate going to a Memorial Day ceremony at a local cemetery. Honor a fallen military member by: flying your flag (at 1/2 staff till noon), or place flags on graves, take flowers to the local memorial, place a wreath on a headstone or visit a National Monument.
